Badger lives in a cozy hilltop house on a remote island, surrounded by mementos from her fantastical voyages of years past. A former sea captain, she hasn't set foot on her beloved ship in years, living a quiet life of gardening, journaling, and an occasional mail-check. That peaceful existence is upended when a small, bedraggled creature washes up on shore and an unexpected storm rages across the island. After attempting to save her old ship, Badger and her new companion find themselves adrift at sea. Reluctant Badger must face her fears and get them home again, though not before drafting a whole crew of animal friends along the way. This Swedish import is gentle while still managing to surprise, and Badger makes for an incredibly charming, if grumbly, protagonist. The inviting illustrations create a cozy world, and younger readers will delight in the visual details on every page, from Badger's eclectic souvenirs to the tiny knitted hats that the crew members don. A terrific tale of the joy in forged friendships and unanticipated adventures.
